Servo Motor

Servo Motor

AC servo motor is a type of servo motor that use AC electrical input in order to produce mechanical output in the form of precise angular velocity. AC servo motor includes an encoder which is used by the controllers to give the feedback as well as closed loop control. AC motor can be located to high accuracy as well as controlled accurately as necessary for the applications. Usually these motors have higher tolerance designs or better bearings and some simple designs also use higher voltages to achieve greater torque. The application of AC motor mainly involves automation, robot, numberical control machinery and other applications, with high precision and necessary versatility.

Types of Servo Motor

Features of AC Servo Motor

  • It offers reliability as well as stability in operation.

  • There is not much noise generated at the time of operation.

  • As brushes and slip rings are not present here thus it reduces maintenance cost.

  • It is not used for continuous energy conversion but only for precise speed and precise position control at high torque.

  • It produces high torque at all speeds including zero speed.

Working Principle of AC Servo Motor

Working Principle of AC Servo Motor

Firstly, a constant AC voltage is provided at the main winding of the AC servo motor stator. Another certain sub terminal of the servo motor is connected with the control transformer through the control winding. Due to the reference voltage provided, the shaft of the synchronous generator rotates at a specific speed and obtains a certain angular position. The shaft of the control transformer has a certain angular position, which is compared with the angular position of the shaft of the synchronous generator. By comparing the two angular positions, the error signal is given. More specifically, an error signal is generated by comparing the voltage level of the corresponding shaft position. This error signal corresponds to the voltage level on the control transformer. This signal is then supplied to a servo amplifier that generates a variable control voltage. When this voltage is applied, the rotor reaches a specific speed again and starts to rotate until the value of the error signal is 0, so as to achieve the desired position of the motor in the AC servo motor.

Applications of AC Servo Motor

AC servo motors have a widely applications and these majorly finds applications in the instruments that operate on servo mechanism, in position controlling devices, computers. And these also find applications in robotics, automation, CNC equipment, and many more applications.
