How to Solve the Overheating Servo Motor?

Servo motor product is one of the important parts in many machinery productions. In many applications, there are many reasons to cause servo motor device overheated. When using servo motor parts, it is necessary to check the reason carefully and find the solution accordingly. In this article, we will talk about the common reasons for overheating servo motor equipment and the solutions, and hope that it is helpful for you.

How to Solve the Overheating Servo Motor

Reasons for overheating servo motor

1: Too much or too little grease.

2: The oil quality is not good and contains impurities.

3: The bearing is not properly matched with the journal or end cover due to too loose or too tight.

4: The inner hole of the servo motor bearing is eccentric, rubbing with the servo motor shaft.

5: The electric motor end cover or bearing cover is not installed flat.

6: The coupling between the motor and the load is not calibrated, or the belt is too tight.

7: The bearing gap is too large or too small.

8: The electric motor shaft is bent.

9: The load is too large.

10: Phase loss.

11: The air duct is blocked.

12: The low-speed operation time is too long.

The solution of overheating servo motor

There are two possibilities and solutions for the protection after overheating.

The first one is the selection of the servo motor. Excessive inertia will cause the servo motor to run unstable and overheat; at this time, you should consider adding a servo reducer.

The second is that the harmonics contained in the output of servo drive are too large. After entering the servo motor, it will cause the servo motor overheated. At this time, you should consider adding a special output filter for the servo drive to suppress it.

There should be three reasons for the heating of the motor

1. The heat generated by the motor during operation cannot be dissipated in time, resulting in heat accumulation, and the motor is hot;

2. The torque is too low. For example, pulling a load requires a force of 20 Nm, but the actual output of the motor is only about 15 Nm. It is very difficult for the motor to pull the load. If it takes a long time, it will cause the motor to heat up;

3. It is the problem of electromagnetic interference. The harmonics in the interference will cause the motor to heat up. At this time, a special servo filter should be added to suppress it.

The allowable degree of the motor temperature depends on the insulation level inside the motor. Generally, the internal insulation performance will be destroyed at a high temperature of 130 ℃. It means if the internal temperature does not reach above 130 ℃, the motor will not be damaged, and the temperature of the motor surface is usually below 90℃ at this time. So the temperature of the motor surface is within the normal range of 70~80℃.

It is best to firstly confirm the cause of the heat. If it is normal heat, the servo motor component doesn’t need to be treated. If it is a fault to cause overheating, you need to send it directly to the local after-sales service to inspect.
