What Is the Difference Between VFD and Servo Drive?

Fanuc servo drive systems are used more and more widely in fanuc cnc machine, robotics and factory automation. As the technology of the servo drive becomes more and more advanced, the servo system is also more advanced, which is used to provide power for the electric servo mechanism. Before fanuc DC servo drive, variable frequency drives (VFD) were the most commonly used type of industrial mitsubishi drives.  Simply put, the most commonly used fanuc drive in the industry are servo drives and VFDs. Therefore, it is important to understand the differences between the two and which occasions they are suitable for.

What Is the Difference Between VFD and Servo Drive

What Servo Drive Is

The servo system includes industrial servo drive, industrial CNC controller, feedback devices and most importantly servo drives. To put it simply, the servo drive accepts a specific command from the control system, amplifies it, and transfers the current to the motor in the servo system after the case, so that the motor generates motion. Specific commands usually include information such as torque, speed, and desired position.

Generally, Fanuc servo motors are equipped with sensors that can read the current position of the motor and feed it back to the servo drive. After the servo drive receives the feedback, it compares the motor state and position with the command information. If the two are different, the servo drive will change the frequency and voltage and other variables to make the two the same.

What Variable Frequency Drive Is

Variable frequency drive is a kind of motor controller, but its working mode is different from fanuc AC servo drive. VFD works directly with the motor by changing the voltage and frequency provided to the motor, but the servo drive provides a signal to the motor to compare the actual position of the motor with the required position. In some cases, the motor does not need to run at full speed. At this time, the VFD is a more suitable choice because it allows the frequency and voltage to be changed. When you don't need full speed, you can reduce the frequency and voltage of the motor to meet your needs. At the same time, this can also reduce the probability of motor failure and extend its service life. Moreover, VFD can also reduce energy consumption, thereby reducing the energy cost of electric motors.

Difference Between VFD and Servo Drive

The Main Difference between VFD and Servo Motor

The most important factor that distinguishes the VFD and the CNC servo motor is the encoder. The servo system cannot work without a CNC spindle encoder, but the VFD can work normally without an encoder.

Servo drives are used to control permanent magnet motors, and VFDs are used to control squirrel cage motors. Compared with squirrel cage motors, permanent magnet motors can produce greater torque, have lower inertia, and can achieve smooth acceleration and deceleration.

In addition, the fanuc system servo drive can generate multi-axis motion and maintain position on a complex path, but the VFD does not have enough computing power to perform this operation. Therefore, the VFD position control capability is not as good as the servo drive.

But the biggest advantage of VFD compared with servo drive is lower energy consumption and longer equipment life.
