How to Choose Between Servo Drive and VFD?

Fanuc servo drives and VFDs are used in machines to drive motors and control motion, but servo fanuc drives are more widely used. Although the functions of the two are similar, why are servo drives more popular?

How to Choose Between Servo Drive and VFD

What Servo Drives and VFDs Are?

Generally speaking, a Fanuc servo drive is used in conjunction with a permanent magnet motor. Its biggest feature is precision and accuracy, which is used for precise speed or position control. The VFD is used in conjunction with an induction motor, and its characteristic is that the speed can be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the voltage sent to the motor, which is used in applications that require speed control. But the disadvantage of VFD is that the speed control is not as accurate as the Mitsubishi ac servo drive.

How to Choose a Servo Drive and VFD

There is a functional overlap between the Fanuc AC servo drive and the VFD, but the two have their own characteristics. In most cases, it is relatively simple to choose the right drive according to your needs. If you encounter both of them that can complete the work, which one is more appropriate?

When coordinated movement between multiple axes is required, such as a robot arm, a servo drive is the appropriate choice. When fast acceleration or deceleration or precise speed control is required, the servo drive is also a good choice, but if the speed needs to be set to a specific speed, VFD is more suitable. Conveyor belts, hydraulic pumps, blowers and electric vehicles that do not require precise control can all choose VFD as their drive.

But in fact, the drive cannot be selected completely based on the type of machine. For example, a conveyor belt running at the same speed for a whole day is suitable for choosing a VFD as the driver. However, if it is a conveyor belt system with higher requirements such as frequent start, stop, forward and reverse, then it is more appropriate to choose a fanuc motor servo drive.

How to Choose a Servo Drive and VFD

When the choice is not clear, we can consider performance, functionality and price.

1. Performance and Features

You need to consider the functions you need to implement by the machine, what actions the machine needs to complete, and whether the precision requirements for the actions are high. Then select the drive according to your needs.

2. Cost

Generally speaking, fanuc servo amplifier drive is more expensive than VFD because they have more functions. The increase in the cost of the drive will also increase the manufacturing cost. You need to consider manufacturing costs and functional requirements.

3. Efficiency

Fanuc system servo drive use permanent magnet motors, VFD uses induction motors, and permanent magnet motors are more efficient than induction motors. Therefore, if you pursue high efficiency, servo drives have more obvious advantages.

4. Size

For the same power, the size of the servo drive is smaller than that of the VFD. If you have higher requirements on the size of the drive, the servo drive is more suitable.

5. Power

For large machines, the power of the drive is very important. The power of the fanuc power servo drive can reach a few hundred kilowatts but the power of the induction system can reach megawatts.
